A New Typing Experience On Varmilo

The Classic-Matt gang vs. the Silk-Smooth squad.

Our favorite keyboard brand - Varmilo, has recently announced that, from September 2020 onward, they will be using a new type of keycap for all Varmilo keyboard selection. This new keycap is named after their initial - the V-Silk.

As the name suggested, the form factor and prominent feature of this new type of keycap are "smooth like silk," as opposed to the classic Varmilo matt-finished keycap.

Texture

Though it is rather subtle, you may tell from the image above that the main change to this new keycap is that we no longer have the classic matt texture touch feeling from the good-old-day Varmilo keyboard. Instead, they have refined the PBT keycap manufacturing process and apply it to their new creation - V-Silk keycap.

Durability

With higher PBT purity in V-Silk, the keycap is now more durable than ever. With the smooth finish, finger stain and oil are less sticky to the surface of keycaps. Your typing experience will stay "fresh" even as time goes by. (Less cleaning needed, yay!)

Thickness

Both classic and V-Silk keycaps have the same 1.3mm thickness and will not affect your hot-swap keyboard setup. Other than the keycaps texture, you won't see as much impact when using the keyboard.

Conclusion and thought

To the classic Varmilo keyboard lovers, I believe this change in keycaps' texture will bring in some naysayers who stand firmly in the name of "classic." Yes, the classic matt finish is undoubtedly remarkable, but the new V-Silk's smooth finish is equally impressive as well, considering the R&D Varmilo has put into this new keycap. I like the durability and cleanliness of this high PBT purity keycap (so I can type like there is no tomorrow).

You certainly can pick your side—the Classic-Matt gang vs. the Silk-Smooth squad.
